Two cases of Culpable Homicide, Reckless and / or Negligent Driving have been opened owing to the recent Ikageng, Potchefstroom and Zeerust fatal accidents respectively.

It is alleged that a bakkie (Tata) was crossing the N12 when it collided with a Hyundai. Some of the passengers who were at the back of the bakkie fell off the bakkie and were strewn across the road. A third vehicle; Kia which was also travelling on the N12 drove onto the accident scene where victims were lying on road. Seven (7) people, however, survived the fatal vehicle crash but sustained slight to serious injuries.

In other news, it has emerged that a vehicle (bakkie) that was pulling a trailer, overturned along the N4 - around Khunotswane T-Junction, Dinokana, near Ramatu High School at approximately 16:45 on Monday, 1st July 2019. Three (3) people, all males, died at the accident scene while an unconfirmed number was taken by ambulances to nearby hospitals.

The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage and an investigation into the matter continues. This will including confirmation of ages and number of people that were injured as well as the extent of their injuries.

Meanwhile the province continues to experience minor road accidents and incidences, in Maquassie Hills, a car collided with a animal-drawn cart. Whereas in JB Marks a truck lost control and overturned. On both occasions the drivers and passengers survived albeit sustaining injuries.

MEC Lehari has since sent his message of condolences to the bereaved families as well as wish those who are injured a speedy recovery. SAPS too, was called upon to respond swiftly to accident alerts and well as speed up investigations in order to assist families of deceased and injured persons to find closure and or expedite their Road Accident Fund claims and or Motor Vehicle claims, as it were.

MEC Lehari reminds motorists that The National Department of Transport, successfully promulgated Regulation 247 which contemplates. "No person shall operate on a public road a goods vehicle conveying persons unless that portion of the vehicle in which such persons are being conveyed is enclosed... A bakkie or a truck is not designed for the transportation of people and typically such compartments have none of the safety features which are incorporated in the passenger cabin of such vehicles.... In the event of a collision, those who are being transported in the goods compartment of such vehicles are typically ejected from that vehicle and suffer significantly more severe injuries than those who are in the passenger cabin of the vehicle.”

"Please desist from this practise as it is a potential danger lurking on our roads. Concluded MEC Sello Lehari.
